There are two main types of rakes used in the garden. Do you know what their jobs are?
GARDEN LEAF RAKE
This rake has thin tines or prongs on it which are fairly close together. The tines can be made of flexible metal or plastic but rake is designed for raking leaves off lawn and clearing debris from around the yard. The long handle makes it easy to reach in under shrubs to pull out the dead leaves underneath.
SOIL RAKE
This rake is made from hard metal and the tines bend at right angles to the handle. It is not very good at raking up leaves because the hard tines get stuck in the lawn but it is good for spreading out sand or levelling the garden bed before planting seeds. To make the soil really smooth, flip the rake over so that the flat edge runs along the ground.
SMARTY TIP: Always wear closed in shoes when using a rake and never leave the rake with the tines facing up on the lawn. It could be very dangerous if someone steps on it and it punctures their foot.
