Capsicums are a confusing vegetable; not least because they are actually a fruit! But also because they are related to hot chillies but yet they taste sweet. They are crazy!
Crazy or not, they’re delicious. They can be cut into strips and used to dig into dips, they can be chopped into tiny pieces and cooked in a casserole and they can be cut into diamonds to be added to a stir fry. They can even be stuffed! No, we don’t mean tired, we mean stuffed with a delicious meat and rice mixture. Whether cooked or raw, they are a very useful veg to have in the fridge.
Instead of eating a capsicum, how about turning one into art? They’re incredibly easy to cut into, even with a plastic knife, so they are great for turning into scary faces for Halloween or perhaps making into a sweet capsicum family. They can even be carved with fabulous patterns with diamonds and zig zags and if you cut a hole in the base, you can put a battery tealight in them so that they light up the dinner table. They come in red, black, purple, green, yellow and orange so there’s a colour to suit every decor.
So, as that cute boy band says, ‘let’s go crazy, crazy crazy with the capsicum!’. At least we think that’s what they’re singing. It’s very good advice indeed.
