Seaweed extract is not a fertiliser for plants but a tonic – a bit like a multivitamin. It is actually made from seaweed that is harvested from areas of the ocean where the seaweed is overgrown.
Products with seaweed in them are almost magical for a vegie and flower garden. Even though they aren’t a fertiliser as they don’t have all the nutrients in them, they do help make the plants grow very strong.
Seaweed extract encourages strong root growth so that the plants become strong too and it helps to thicken the cell walls of the leaves, stems and roots so that they can cope better with very hot or cold weather. And, because they are so healthy, they don’t get bugged by bugs so much!
Seaweed extract can be mixed in a watering can and applied over the leaves and the soil once every fortnight. It can be used on every plant in the garden as well as the lawn and it is totally organic. The plants love it!
SMARTY TIP:
When you bring your seedlings home from the garden centre, sit them in a flat tray with some seaweed extract diluted in water and then plant them out. This will get them off to a fantastic start!
