Maintaining the school garden is all about doing little jobs often! It’s not that hard if everyone pitches in.
THE HARVESTING TEAM
The Harvesting Team gets to do this fun job whenever the fruit and vegetables are ripening.
The rule is that the Harvesting Team should always whistle while they work! That way, everyone will know when someone is popping something in their mouth as they won’t be able to whistle and eat at the same time!
The harvesting team has to be very good at knowing what the ripe fruit or vegetables look like so that they don’t pick them too late. Take a look at the Smarty Fact as these will show pictures of ripe fruit and vegies as well as give tips on how to pick each one.
Don’t worry if some of the leafy vegetables have a few holes in them. That’s a good thing as it means that an insect has taste tested it first and it must be just about ready for picking.
This job is best done early in the day before the hot sun gets onto the plants. Place the fruit and vegies in a basket, being careful not to squash them, and wash them well before sharing them with everyone else in the class.
