Cutting Garlic

GARLIC BULB
The garlic bulb is the whole head of garlic, just as it is pulled out of the ground.  To break the bulb open, use your fingers to pull apart each of the pieces which are called cloves.

GARLIC CLOVES
The cloves are the pieces of the bulb once they have been pulled apart.  They will have a papery skin on them which needs to be peeled off before chopping or slicing.  To peel a clove, use a small knife to trim off the top and the tail.  Then, use the bottom of a small saucepan to squash the clove a little.  The skin will then be easy to peel off with your fingers.

SLICED GARLIC
If a recipe asks for sliced garlic, use a small knife to cut a clove very thinly.

CHOPPED GARLIC
To chop garlic, start by slicing the number of cloves required.  Then use a knife to chop the garlic into very tiny pieces.  Ask an adult to chop the garlic for you or to teach you how to do this safely.  Or, use a garlic crusher instead.

CRUSHED GARLIC
Crushed garlic, also called minced garlic, is a common ingredient in recipes.  A garlic crusher is a small tool that squashes the garlic through tiny holes so that they are soft. To use a garlic crusher, open it up and place one or two cloves into the small cup.  Close the crusher and press really firmly to squeeze out the garlic.  Use a spoon to scrape the crushed garlic into the bowl or pan.
