Hormone gel or hormone powder is also called rooting hormone gel because it’s main job is to encourage roots to grow when taking cuttings.
When taking cuttings, the stem is cut and then placed into the soil but just before it is, the very tip of it is dipped into the hormone gel or powder. This contains a combination of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that seal the tip of the cutting to stop bacteria from getting in but also encourages the roots to grow.
SMARTY TIP: It is very important never to dip the cutting into the container of gel or powder as it will become contaminated. Instead, pour a small amount of the gel or powder into an egg cup and dip into that. Throw this little bit away when you’ve finished for the day.
