Grass Heads

Grass Heads are fantastic fun.  They are strange little characters with grass hair that love to watch the world go by from the window sill.

YOU WILL NEED:
A pair of old pantyhose cut in to 20centimetre lengths
Potting mix
Grass seeds
Rubber bands
Decorations such as google eyes, felt, pipe cleaners.
PVA glue

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut the pantyhose to the length that you need.
  2. If it’s not the end with the toe, tie a knot in it so the potting mix doesn’t fall out.
  3. Turn the pantyhose inside out so the knot is on the inside.
  4. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of grass seed across the bottom of the stocking.
  5. Fill the pantyhose with potting mix.
  6. Tie a knot in the pantyhose so that it is firm.
  7. Turn it up the other way so that the seed is on the top and the knot is on the bottom.
  8. Twist a section of the pantyhose containing the soil in to a nose and use a rubber band to secure it.  Do the same on each side to form ears.
  9. Glue on decorations for eyes and a mouth.
  10. Make a pair of glasses out of the pipe cleaners to sit on the eyes and ears.
  11. Either sit the grass head on a damp sponge or on top of a vase so that the tail of the stocking sits in the water below.
  12. As the grass hair grows make sure you keep it watered with a water spray gun and if the hair gets too long, give it a hair cut!

TEACHERS: Grass Heads are a great opportunity to teach children about osmosis since the water soaks up through the stocking and the potting mix.
